Puppyhood is hard. Raising a puppy is hard - there's no denying it. Living with a puppy can be exciting, rewarding, and, let’s be honest, sometimes overwhelming and chaotic, especially when you're juggling work, kids, other pets, and everyday life.

If puppyhood isn't quite the joyful experience you imagined, you're not alone! Puppies are a lot of work, and you don't have to figure everything out on your own. The good news is I'm here to help make raising your puppy more manageable, enjoyable, and fun! Together, we'll create a plan that works for you and your puppy, giving you the tools and confidence to handle the challenges, celebrate the little victories, and build a relationship that will last a lifetime. Let's make puppyhood less overwhelming and a whole lot more enjoyable!

When should I start training my puppy? Now! It’s never too early to start helping your puppy learn about the world around them. But puppy training may look a little different than you expect. Your puppy is learning everything for the first time. Before obedience, your puppy needs to feel safe, secure, and understood. Building trust, creating a predictable routine, and helping your puppy feel confident in their environment are the foundation for raising a well-adjusted dog. Instead of expecting your puppy to immediately know how to behave, we can focus on teaching them the skills they need in a way that makes sense to them. Puppyhood can feel overwhelming, but you don’t have to figure it all out on your own. I'm here to support you and together, we can make raising and training your puppy easier, more enjoyable, and a whole lot less stressful—for both of you.

Preparing for a puppy. Preparation can make a big difference in how smoothly the transition goes.  A little preparation helps create a sense of safety, predictability, and confidence from the very beginning. For a puppy, coming home is a huge life change. They are leaving their mother and littermates, entering a completely unfamiliar environment, and suddenly experiencing new sights, sounds, smells, people, routines, and expectations. Having their space, supplies, schedule, and basic routines prepared ahead of time gives them fewer things to figure out. A predictable routine can help a puppy settle in, sleep better, begin potty training, and learn what is expected of them without feeling overwhelmed. Bringing a puppy home can be overwhelming for you as well. Knowing where the puppy will sleep, where they will potty, what they will eat, how they will be safely confined, and how their day will be structured allows you to focus on building a relationship rather than trying to figure everything out in the moment. Instead of expecting a puppy to immediately know how to behave, you can set them up for success by creating appropriate boundaries, providing opportunities to rest and explore, and introducing new experiences gradually. Together we can set up your home for success to make the transition enjoyable and successful for everyone.

 

Socialization. Early socialization (up to 16 weeks of age) is one of the most important parts of raising a confident, well-adjusted puppy. It helps prepare a puppy to cope in unfamiliar situations with curiosity rather than feeling overwhelmed or worried.  Socialization isn’t simply about introducing a puppy to lots of people and other dogs. It’s about gently helping a puppy learn that the world is safe, predictable, and worth exploring. Socialization is the process of exposing your puppy to a variety of experiences, people, environments, sounds, surfaces, handling, and everyday situations in a way that feels safe and positive. The goal isn't to overwhelm a puppy with experiences. It's to help them have successful experiences. The foundation of trust, safety, confidence, and predictability can make a tremendous difference as your puppy grows into an adult dog. As part of our training, I will create a personalized socialization plan for your puppy.​​

Every puppy has individual needs. Every puppy has unique motivators, ways of communicating, energy levels, and personality. It is important to tailor puppy socialization and training to your puppy as an individual, meeting their needs and setting them up for success. Puppy raising relies on a consistent predictable routine, environmental management, lots of love, patience, and supporting emotional well-being. We will work together to determine your puppy's specific needs and create a personalized raising and training plan for your puppy.​

How long will it take? Every puppy's journey is different. Progress depends on many factors, including environment, genetics, early learning, and age. When your puppy hits adolescence (around 6 month) everything changes. It feels like everything they have learned to this point has been forgotten. They are becoming more independent, experiencing new emotions, have selective listening, test boundaries, and have changes in social behavior and fear response. ​Their ability to control impulses, handle frustration, make thoughtful choices, and regulate emotions is still developing. This is why adolescence is not the time to simply expect your puppy to "know better." Instead, it's an opportunity to continue teaching, reinforcing good choices, and helping them develop the skills they will need as adults. The good news is they haven't forgotten what you have taught them. They're growing, changing, and learning how to navigate a much bigger world. This is why training with a puppy takes time. Their learning is not linear as they grow and mature. Give your puppy time to grow, learn, and make mistakes. The goal isn't to create a perfect puppy but to build a trusting relationship and give your puppy the skills they need to become a confident, well-adjusted adult dog.
