Helping dogs have polite behavior
in everyday living
What manners looks like. Everyone has a different idea of how they want their dog to act and navigate the world. Basic manners is structured around calm, predictable, polite behaviors that are important for safety and everyday living. Your dog can learn how to sit, stay, down, come, greet guests politely, walk on a leash without pulling, and much more. Advanced manners focuses on teaching your dog the skills necessary to handle distractions and real-life challenges with ease. In addition to proofing behaviors (making them reliable) around intense distractions, your dog can learn to focus and have calm emotional regulation. Working toward your goals, we can help your dog reframe negative behavior patterns into desired behaviors.
Misconceptions about behavior. There is a misconception that our dogs are being 'naughty' on purpose - this couldn't be farther from the truth. When a dog doesn't listen it can be for a variety of reasons. They don't understand what you are asking of them, they are distracted, overexcited, there is a lack of motivation, or they receive inconsistent messages. Additionally, dogs have difficulty listening if they are scared, overwhelmed, confused, or in pain.
We will work together to get to the bottom of why the negative behaviors are happening and help your dog understand what you want from them. Remember, your dog is not choosing to be bad, they are just communicating.
Every dog has individual needs. Every dog has unique motivators, ways of communication, fears, history of reinforcement, energy levels, and impulse control. It is important to tailor manners training to your dog as an individual, meeting their needs and setting them up for success. Manners relies on consistent predictable routine, environmental management, reinforcing calming behaviors, incorporating an enrichment plan, and supporting emotional well-being. We will work together to determine your dogs specific needs and I will create a personalized step-by-step training plan focused on your goals and your dogs needs.
How long will it take? Every dog’s journey is different. Progress depends on many factors, including your dog’s history, environment, genetics, age, and how long they have been practicing the negative behaviors. Manners is not a one time fix all, it is an ongoing lifestyle practice. Some dogs improve quickly, while others need more time and support. Lasting behavior change does not happen overnight, but with consistency, compassion, and the right guidance, meaningful improvement is possible.
